The first evidence of human activity in the site of city of Khmelnytskyi belong to the 2000 BC, the archaeological excavations confirm the presence of permanent settlements during Scythian historical period and period of Chernyakhov culture. The year 1431 is considered as foundation date of Khmelnytskyi, the first written mention of the initial name of Khmelnytskyi (Ploskirivtsi) belong to the 1431. Starting from the 1795 the settlement was called Proskurov, it was renamed to Khmelnytskyi in 1954. The economy of modern Khmelnytskyi includes range of well developed industries such as chemical industry, machine building and food industry. Retailing is also a great part of city's economy, Khmelnytskyi cloth market have the third-biggest turnover in Europe. The city has 4 theaters, Philharmonic, numerous museums and three local television stations.
